On Thursday we all visited the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, a centre for contemporary arts funded in 1995 by the contemporary art collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, which aims to foster the production of works by young and emerging artists. After a talk with Irene Calderoni, one of the curators at the Fondazione, we went to see the exhibition Un’Espressione Geografica (Curated by Francesco Bonami), featuring works of young artists who developed works in different locations of Italy, dealing with issues related to cultural identity, politics, architecture, among others. I was particularly impressed by the collaborative works of Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs (see picture bellow) and the film OUR HOUSE – THE NEST by the collective NOMAD.
After the visit, some of us went to the PAV (Parco Arte Vivente), a contemporary centre that focuses on “living” art, or art with live elements. We started the visit on the exhibition “Living Works” by the controversial Brazilian artist Eduardo Kac, followed by the interactive scientific installations by Piero Gilardi and finishing at the open air space, a park with installations by Dominique Gonzales-Foerster, Emmanuel Louisgrand, Raffaella Spagna & Andrea Caretto, Gilles Clément, Luigi Mainolfi, Ettore Favini and the collective work by Felice Gualtieri, Armando Mangone and Maria Luisa Priori. We finish our visit having a nice time at the grass, observing the surroundings and talking about art issues (as usual). One thing that strongly called my attention was the style of the neighborhood (see picture bellow), comprised by a large amount of residential buildings, grouped in blocks and forming a quite rational patterns, which reminded me of some housing states of London. It was very interesting to spend a few moments on that deserted, contemporary arts park, perceiving the contrast between the PAV area and its vicinity.
On the following ours I took another random walk around the city center, observing particular elements on the landscape. Amongst them I highlight a construction site that looked not so active, in a way that one can’t really tell if it’s a derelict or active construction site, an interesting break on the usual ephemeral aspect of construction sites. In front of it, there was an old pub under refurbishment, with a completely wasted English phone cabin, which made feel almost in London again… I also found a big community of pigeons, inhabiting a post and the wall in front of it and, just across the road, one of the most interesting construction-related spray marks on the ground, stating in a very conceptual way: tubo (pipe) and asfalto (asphalt). That’s my type of art, urban and ephemeral!
In the evening, I went back to the SUB URB ART , where there was a projection about protests against the plan of a new railway around the city going on. Unfortunately I couldn’t get any information about the video, but if I find something I’ll update this post. At the end of the night I had fun with Garu-garu, playing with his fancy light gadgets and making some experimental light paintigs. Very cool indeed!!!
As I got to know more about the project, I felt more and more attracted to come back, so on Sunday I was there again for the closing day party. The space was absolutely packed and there were some new interesting elements, such as a 3D TV, a ping-pong table and a swimming pool. The public of that day was around 2000 people, a quite expressive amount of people, in comparison to the contemporary arts spaces. The works that Matteo (Raw Tella), Eugenio and the URBE association was so successful that the space became incredible live and welcoming, full of activities and visitors every day, throughout the whole day as well as a constant flux of artists working and leaving their marks on the space (Highlighting ROA, one of my favorite street artists)… I very much look forward to meeting these guys again and maybe plant a seed for future collaborations in Biella, London, São Paulo or anywhere else, fingers crossed!
